How to Prepare for Your Therapy Session

Updated: Oct 1

Therapy is a powerful tool for personal growth and healing, but it's essential to remember that the work doesn't stop when your session ends. Effective therapy often involves doing some of the heavy lifting outside of the therapy room. As a mental health therapist, I'm a firm believer that in order for real change and processing to occur, it's crucial to engage in activities and reflections between sessions. While there are many different types of therapy, this blog focuses on traditional processing or talk therapy. Here are three practical tips to help you maximize your therapeutic journey:

Tip #1 - Ask Your Therapist

The most straightforward way to ensure you're making the most of your therapy sessions is to communicate directly with your therapist. Ask them if they have any specific suggestions on how you should prepare for your sessions. Since you are working closely with this professional, they are your most reliable source of information regarding what might be beneficial for you to focus on between meetings.

Your therapist can provide guidance on topics to explore, exercises to complete, or areas to reflect upon before your next session. This proactive approach not only shows your commitment to the process but also helps tailor the work to your unique needs. Remember, your therapist's insights can offer valuable direction, so don't hesitate to seek their advice on how to best prepare and engage outside of your sessions.

Tip #2 - Do Your Homework (If Given)

In many therapy approaches, homework or assignments are a common practice. These tasks are designed to help you apply the concepts discussed during your sessions to your daily life, promoting deeper understanding and personal growth. Homework can vary greatly depending on your goals, the focus of your sessions, and your therapist's approach.

If your therapist provides homework, make sure to jot down the assignments and any instructions they give you. Follow through with these tasks as best as you can. Completing your homework can offer valuable insights and progress that will enrich your next session.

However, if your therapist doesn't assign homework, don't worry—this is not a mandatory aspect of every therapeutic approach. In this case, you might want to ask your therapist if there are specific areas or exercises they recommend focusing on over the next week.

Engaging in these suggested activities can still enhance your therapeutic experience. If you find yourself unable to complete a homework task, don't be discouraged. Discussing the challenges you faced with your therapist can provide important insights and help you refine your approach moving forward.

Tip #3 - Journal or Jot Down Thoughts and Feelings

One of the most effective ways to keep track of your emotional and mental state between sessions is through journaling or jotting down your thoughts and feelings. It’s not uncommon to walk into a therapy session feeling like you have nothing significant to discuss, especially if the session is on a “good” day. Conversely, you might forget about critical issues that felt urgent just a few days ago.

Keeping a journal or writing down notes in your phone, allows you to capture your thoughts, feelings, and any significant events as they occur. This practice can be especially helpful for remembering and articulating what you want to address during your sessions. By documenting your experiences and reflections, you can bring more depth and context to your therapy, ensuring that important topics are not overlooked.

Integrating these practices into your routine can significantly enhance your therapeutic experience. By asking your therapist for preparation tips, completing any assigned homework, and journaling your thoughts and feelings, you can foster meaningful progress and growth. Remember, therapy is a collaborative process, and engaging in these activities outside of sessions can help you make the most of your time with your therapist, ultimately leading to a more effective and rewarding journey of self-discovery and healing.
